Ranking of the Month - October 2007
The Ranking of the Month is ranking that represents the ideals of the site best. It should be well made. Very thought provoking. Influential. A game-changer. It should resonate months if not years after it is made. Everything will be considered. It's composition. Originality. Execution. Creativity. Its votes, comments, views, ratings. Its forum interest. It all is open.

Below are 6 nominees (there are an incredible 394 candidates & I looked at every single one) that were made during October 2007. I went through all of them (as I always do). I whittled them down to 41 to consider. (Last month there were 47 and the month before that there were 18.) From those 41, I wound up with these 6. I want an honest & serious discussion from the Rankopedia membership on which of these rankings deserves to be considered the Ranking of the Month - October 2007. (Note: More weight is given to opinions that are well-reasoned and sound arguments. Extra credit will be given to arguments that establish buy-ins from other members.)

First Round
1) Most Promising Future... Greguva is probably the only creator on Rankopedia who could have his work published without any editing. His best rankings are either about music or have an offbeat edge to them. This ranking is both.

2) Best Rankopedia Member Normally I take this time to deride Harvey for including these incestuous Rankopedia related rankings but I've got to admit it was one hell of a class.

3) Best Rock Instrumental A prototypical Greguva musical ranking. It's essential and well done but it's not as flashy as some of the competition.

4) Most Famous Person To Die In A Car Crash would be a better title. There's no point in pussy footing around the subject matter. It's a bit on the macabre side, but it's a cult classic for sure.

5) Best Barcelona Player Why was this included? I'm an American with little interest in soccer and the introduction doesn't bother to explain WTF a "Barcelona Player" is. Epic fail

6) Best Dustin Hoffman Movie I think Rankopedia should create a better index for rankings like this. Alone, they aren't terribly interesting, but if all the best actor/actress movie rankings were put together you'd have a nice resource for movie buffs.

The Bronze Medal Goes To...
Best Instrumental- I'm not suggesting Antoine do this, but wouldn't it be cool if you could sample a few bars from each of the candidates?

The Silver Medal - Most Promising Future...This is in a virtual tie for 1st. Both have similar themes and appeal, both have problematic titles. The only reason why this came in second is because the concept is more nuanced. I actually prefer nuance over blunt force trauma, but this month's winner is going to create a traffic jam as people stop by to rubberneck.

Gold Medal- Most Famous Person in an Automobile Death- IF IT BLEEDS, IT LEADS Do I have to explain why the title is poor? You've got to use the phrase "car crash", even "automoblile accident" is too weak. It's a ranking about famous people who died in car crashes.

I'd go with
1.Most famous person in automobile death(agree about the title being poor)

2.Most promising future

3.Rock instrumental

Just to make it easier
I've taken the feedback above (all of it good), and changed the title to: Most Famous Person To Die in an Automobile Accident. I typically think overly long titles become longwinded and confusing but in this case my brevity left it too short.

You of course have to include the word 'accident' or 'crash' in the title, otherwise John F. Kennedy would have to be included because he died in an automobile (then again, maybe Oswald accidentally shot him while cleaning his rifle).

Some Hard Choices, as predicted, the rankings keep getting better and better:

6) Barcelona Player - Although updated far too few candidates for a club like this...

5) Best Rock Instrumental - purely due to my ignorance of music and that I hadn't heard of many of the songs....bands yes, songs no....if it had a Doors one in...Peacefrog for example, maybe it would have got a place better :)

4) Best Rankopedia Member - Great, thorough ranking but there are similar rankings out there for different periods of Rankopedia's difference, doubt that this is differentiated so much that it could be considered number 1 for Oct '07

3) Dustin Hoffman Movie - Great thorough raking like the Rankopedia Member but again there are lots like this out there for various great actors and actresses, hard to say that this is so different that it should be the best....

2) Tough choice.....Both are interesting, both are informative, both are very well done, both are definite 5 star rankings....on a coin flip I call Most Promising Future Aborted for a Musician, purely as it is focussed on music, if that is a reason.... sorry. :)

1) So first by the narrowest margin yet as far as I am concerned is Most famous person in automobile death....Superb Ranking!

My top 2
I think the competition is really just about two rankings: Most Promising Future Aborted for a Musican, and Most Famous Person to Die in an Automobile Crash. And ironically, the two rankings are somewhat similar in that they deal with death of famous people (and some candidates are on both lists).

Ironically, I was working on a ranking similar to Greguva's at the time he released it; he beat me to the punch. And fortunately for all of us he did, because Greguva is much better a music rankings than I am.

Neither Greguva or I ever self promote our rankings, so the relatively low vote totals from members on the rankings (62 for Musician, 60 for automobile death) is explanatory.

They both are complete rankings in terms of information and candidate inclusion, and are nationally diversified.

A lot of it comes down to what appeals to you more. Music, particularly rock music, is very popular on Rankopedia. So in that sense, the Musician ranking is a bullseye on the sites membership.

The Autmobile death ranking has a phenomenal # of views: 23,864. I think this is because of the pictures, and Princess Diana is one of the most searched individuals in internet history, so that may come into play there. Given the number of views (compared to 400 for the Music ranking), the Automobile ranking has far greater potential to draw in new members.

Really, I cannot separate the two, other than to state that they are miles ahead of the other four candidates.

Given that I will vote, I'm going to give my ranking about The Most Famous Person to Die in an Automobile Accident the win at 1a, with The Most Promising Future Aborted for a Musician at 1b. The swing vote for me is the # of views.

But both are deserving.

I think "Best Rock Instrumental" and "Best Dustin Hoffman Movie" are great rankings. But neither are Ranking of the Months. "Best Barcelona Player Ever" has some great stats, but I just think it is too dry and statistics based. So my top 3 are:

# 3 "Most Promising Future Aborted for a Musician Who Died Young (45 or Under)" - Tough race between # 2 & 3. I really just want to vote Reindeer's ranking higher. Mainly because it is about famous people with no boundaries except a car crash incident. Greguva's ranking is excellent, but it is specific to musicians. I just think Reindeer's has more global appeal.

# 2 "Most Famous Person to Die in an Automobile Death" (see # 3 for reasoning)

# 1 "Best Member of Rankopedia (September-December 2007)" It is # 1 in five different significant categories. I understand the arguments about this ranking does not have interest to non-members outside the site. But I would argue, that this ranking has been very interesting for the members of Rankopedia. Do non-members really care about the Ranking of the Month. Of course not.
